A few hints about materials (from my B2 for 3dsmax experience)

    Hi,

browsing a bit the material gallery I've noticed that some hint could help.

    - "Prevent internal reflection" (under the "reflections" panel, e.g. in the b2 advanced material): Always turn it on if available (it's already on by default on some materials like glass and chrome). It can speed up a lot your renderings.

    - Fresnel reflections: some b2 advanced shaders got fresnel reflections by default  (wax, car paint) so just change the reflection, in other situations just use a fresnel blend map in the reflection slot.

    - 2 Sided: in order to obtain "correct" results it should be always on in materials like sss and glasses/transparent ones.

    - highlights: you can usually turn them off if you got hdr environments or white cards - "superwhite" bright objects in scene, and if the material is reflective, of course.

Please try this stuff, experimenting with the materials already present in the gallery and the PaulS' "trophy" scene.

Those are very valid and useful suggestions. Thanks. The 'prevent internal reflections' control makes a huge difference with transparent materials but almost none if there is no transparency. One thing to note with the Fresnel Blend map is that it can add a considerable render hit and not always produce a noticeably better result. I'm working on a scene right now where if the materials used have this added the render doubles in time and the visual results are negligible. There are places where I think the fresnel blend is essential though. The 2 sided......for glass yes but with the example of SSS I used which is in the materials gallery I don't see any difference. Do you have a visual example where it shows how it effects the end result?
