Problems Applying Materials (to a model from Solidworks)

     Hi everyone,

I recently downloaded the Brazil trial for Rhino and it seems like a great tool. When applying materials and things to models I've made in Rhino everything works fine, but when I import a SolidWorks model into Rhino the Brazil materials don't seem to apply to the bodies. It'll all just stay as the defaut grey.

Is there a known issue with SolidWorks models being rendered in Brazil through Rhino, or should this be working properly?

    Some extra things to note:

    • I'm using Windows XP-64bit, Rhino 4.0 (SR6) and SolidWorks 2008.
    • I've tried importing the model from SolidWorks as: .sldasm, .sldprt and IGES.
    • I've tried having materials applied to the parts in SolidWorks before importing them into Rhino.

Any help on this would be great. Thank you.

It should work...what procedure are you using to apply them to the objects? I.e. by layer, drag-and-dropping from the material editor, etc.?

     Thanks for the speedy reply.

I've tried applying materials by dragging-and-dropping, assigning to layers, right clicking and assigning to selection and no luck from any of them. I've had a bit of progress by importing as a STEP file, but it's a bit of a hassle having to explode the model and re-group all the parts.

     Hi Visario,

My first thought is that the imported parts are coming in as block instances. In Brazil any block will have to have a material assignment prior to becoming an instance. If you use the "explode" command once on each selection that may solve the issue. If not, please send a portion of the model as the SW file. You can also use the "what" command in Rhino to see if it's a block instance or not before the explode.
